FREE Private Lessons with Kobe
We are thrilled to offer FREE private chess lessons with our talented coach, Kobe, as part of our ongoing commitment to making quality chess education accessible to all!
Saturdays, 2:00-3:00 PM at DJCC before our regular club meetings
Saturdays, 1:00-2:00 PM at Subiaco Library (when there is no club meeting)
Sundays, 2:30-3:30 PM at Subiaco Library
These lessons are one-on-one to ensure that each student receives personalized attention. Even students at similar skill levels have unique learning styles and needs, so we focus on individual progress. We also aim to minimize distractions, such as peer-to-peer chatting during lessons.
Currently, these free private lessons are exclusively available to our club members due to Kobe's limited availability. However, we are working on expanding the program with more volunteers to offer additional slots in the future.
2. Why It’s Free
At DJCC, we believe that learning should be a right, not a privilege, and that chess education should be accessible to everyone. Our goal is to nurture a true passion for chess, focusing not just on winning trophies but on using chess as a platform for social connection, personal growth, and enjoyment.
We understand that children come from different backgrounds, and some families face financial challenges. By offering free private lessons, we ensure that every child, regardless of their circumstances, has the opportunity to learn and thrive through chess. Personal success should never come at the expense of others, and by building a supportive, inclusive community, we hope to make chess a rewarding and enriching experience for all.
3. We Take It Seriously
While the lessons are free, we approach them with the same commitment as paid sessions. We appreciate the time and effort parents invest in bringing their children on time, and we believe that full participation and dedication are essential for success.
To reinforce learning, we assign homework after every lesson. Students who follow instructions and complete their homework on time will be rewarded with the opportunity to play a game using one of our unique, special chess sets. And if homework doesn’t fit into your family’s routine, don’t worry! Students who focus well during lessons and maintain a positive, engaged attitude will also have the chance to play with their chosen fancy chess set—or even face off against Kobe herself!
4. About Kobe
Kobe’s chess achievements speak for themselves. Her impressive record includes:
2024 WA State Girls' Championship Winner
1st place in the 2024 National U16 Problem-Solving Competition
Numerous state and national titles
As of the latest FIDE ratings in July and August, Kobe is the highest-rated junior female player in WA and the highest-rated U14 junior female player in Australia. Despite coming from a family with no chess background, she discovered her love for the game after stumbling upon a beginner’s chess book filled with comic illustrations. She began her chess journey at DJCC at the age of seven and quickly excelled in competitions.
Through this private lesson opportunity, Kobe is eager to pass on her knowledge and share her cognitive insights with students who share her passion. She hopes to help them apply what they learn in chess to both their future careers and life skills.
Let's work together to make every minute count! We encourage all participants to bring their best effort and fully engage in the learning process, making each session both rewarding and fun.
